Gabi L. Davis, M.S. exercises science and owner of the Pilates Connection.
I have always been fascinated by movements of the human body. At age three, I began participating in gymnastics. At age six, I was asked to join the West German national team to train for the Olympics. I continued with competitive gymnastics until I was fourteen. I trained the next generation of gymnasts for several years. I then decided to try track and field. I was fast and entered the 100m sprint, relays and hurdle, but I missed the team spirit. I joined a field hockey club. Shortly afterward, I found myself coaching children's field hockey teams. Ten years later I led my girl's team to the German National Field Hockey Championship for two consecutive years.
I made my passion for exercise my profession. I hold a degree in exercise sciences, fitness and dance from the University of Leipzig. With my degree, I also earned a special certification for back rehabilitation and worked with health insurers and doctors to help clients with back issues.
Since 1993, I have worked in the fitness field in Germany and then later in the USA. My occupation is teaching aerobic, step, cardio and other fitness programs, as well as offering personal training. While dealing with the effects from neurocysticercosis, I discovered the Pilates method. I found Pilates fascinating. I loved the mental focus, the attention to detail and the unique movements. Since 1999 I have implemented this method into classes and lessons. I was amazed how much success my clients have. I realized that teaching Pilates is my true calling. When my daughter was born in 2001, I dedicated my career exclusively to Pilates.
I work with a wide range of clients: from quadriplegic to athletes. I believe that Pilates is for everybody, regardless of their predisposition. I see life changing results with Pilates for my clients and I am very proud to be part of their transformation.
I studied several different approaches to Pilates: Physical Mind, Polestar, Stott, Peak Pilates and The Pilates Center, Boulder, Co. My newest endeavor is completing the Peak Pilates teacher trainer process to mentor new teachers.
I am deeply grateful to have studied with master teachers like Amy Taylor-Alpers, Debora Robinson Kolwey, Colleen Glenn, Nancy Hurd and Kimberlie Barrett. I also had the pleasure to meet and work with Jay Grimes, Joseph Pilates' last apprentice. He is my model for the way the Pilates method should be presented.
My Masters thesis detailed the effects of Pilates. I am preparing to enter a Ph.D program to continue my professional growth and manifest the Pilates method within traditional sport science.
David Zimmerman, BS exercise science.
From a young age, I loved to explore the natural world. There was a dead-end near my house
where my friends and I would play in the woods: sometimes on foot, sometimes by
bike, and, as I got older, on cross-country skis in the winter.I think movement always went
hand-in-hand with the exploration for me.
As I grew through my teens, I began to adventure further
distances on my bike, including overnight trips, and I joined the swim
team.I got deeper into these
activities and began to develop a fascination with human health and
performance, and also with what we called, at the time, the “MIND/BODY”
connection (as if the two were ever separate!).
I studied and practiced meditation, strength training, and
began doing triathlons; researching a broad spectrum of conditioning methods
and “mental training.”
At Michigan State University, I decided to more completely
devote my energy to human health; I believe this was partially inspired by the
loss of my father to Coronary Heart Disease when I was 10 (he was 38).In earning my degree in Exercise
Science, I took all the “traditional” health education, science, nutrition,
biomechanics, kinesiology, and anatomy classes (I was a teaching assistant in
the cadaver lab), but I also took many psychology, philosophy, and religion
classes as well as activities like windsurfing and T’ai Chi. Throughout
college, I also enjoyed a terrific part-time job in a technical running store
and learned a great deal about gait mechanics, among many other things.
My love for movement and for human health continued after
college as I worked with folks with developmental disabilities, starting with
children and, later, adults.
When the opportunity to work at an internationally-acclaimed
facility specializing in Mind/Body Medicine presented itself to me, I jumped at
the chance!In 1996, I began working
as a Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor, and, soon-after, a Pilates
Instructor.I was doing lots of
post-rehabilitation, working very closely with Physical Therapists, Physicians,
Exercise Physiologists, Acupuncturists, Massage Therapists and
Nutritionists.Pilates made so
much sense to me and to my clients who all needed a great deal of neuromuscular
re-education.
I was immediately taken by Pilates: the combination of
Healthy Movement, the Spirit of Play, the Aesthetic Beauty, and the Development
of Awareness. I found that,
personally, it kept me safe and made me more confident and capable in all my
activities:including Mountain
Biking, Snowboarding, Canoeing, Hiking, and Trail Running, and with many
clients, it got them back to adventuring in activities from which they had been
restricted.
I have been blessed for many years now, to be able to watch
Pilates change people’s lives in both the clinical and the studio setting.Watching people’s comfort level in
their bodies change, watching them get fitter, and watching them thrive in all
their other activities due to their Pilates work is a joy and an honor.
In the near future, I look forward to utilizing what I’m
continuing to learn in Pilates as I branch deeper into back-country
snowboarding, my ongoing meditation practice, and partner dance, such as the
Argentine Tango.
Lainey Booth, Pilates apprentice.
I grew up in Auckland, New Zealand, where I studied dance throughout my youth. After moving to California as an adult, I taught dance to children professionally for five years. I also studied the Alexander Technique and became an avid exercise enthusiast.
For me, Pilates was love at first exercise. No physical activity helps me connect with and strengthen my body as profoundly as Pilates does.
I am very happy to be learning how to help others benefit from this genius exercise method. My mission is to help people connect with, appreciate, and strengthen their bodies and to establish efficient, healthy movement patterns.
I moved to Bend with my husband in August 2008. What I love about out city is not only its tremendous natural beauty, but also the spirit of positivity, unity and fun that characterizes our community. It's something I enjoy being part of and want to contribute to as much as possible. When I am not in the studio, I enjoy stand-up paddle boarding, watching Nascar, and cooking healthy, natural dishes.
I feel very fortunate to be apprenticing with Gabi and thrilled to be joining the Pilates Connection team.
Over the years the Pilates Connection has supported apprentices through their process to become a Pilates teacher.
We wish the best to all those who have worked at the Pilates Connection.
Thank you to those individuals who made the Pilates Connection a great place.
